Target Information
SLIT and NTRK-like family 1 (Slitrk1) belongs to a family of six homologous transmembrane proteins (Slitrk1–6). These share two conserved leucine-rich repeat domains in the extracellular region and show homology to Slit, a secreted axonal growth-controlling protein, as well as to trk neurotrophin receptors in their intracellular domains.
Expression of Slitrk proteins is largely restricted to neural and brain tumor tissues. Slitrk1 is mainly expressed in mature neurons. Overexpression of Slitrk1 in neuronal cells induces unipolar neurites, whereas other Slitrk proteins inhibit neurite outgrowth, indicating their roles in neurite outgrowth regulation.
Variants of Slitrk1 have been suggested to be associated with Tourette’s Syndrome, though its role may be minor.
