Target Information

Mmgt2 mediates Mg(2+) transport and may provide regulated pathways for Mg(2+) transport in the Golgi and post-Golgi organelles of epithelium-derived cells. Magnesium is an essential metal, but few selective transporters have been identified. The two separate gene products, Mmgt1 and Mmgt2, comprise the family termed membrane Mg(2+) transporters (MMgTs). These proteins reside in the membrane and mediate Mg(2+) transport. The transport of Mg(2+) is saturable, and studies have shown that Mmgt2 fusion proteins localize to the Golgi complex and post-Golgi vesicles, including early endosomes in COS-7 cells transfected with tagged constructs. Related pathways include transport and binding of glucose and other sugars, bile salts, organic acids, metal ions, and amine compounds.
