Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family that plays a critical role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. It is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor for MHC class I molecules. CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found on NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as homodimers. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are key in pathogen and tumor cell clearance, and their differentiation is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
