Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiologic and pathologic processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules termed adipokines.
The C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7 are structural and functional paralogs of adiponectin/ACRP30.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in a wide variety of tissues and act mainly on liver and muscle to control glucose and lipid metabolism.
CTRPs share structural similarity with TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a common ancestral origin.
CTRP5 has been suggested to be involved in age-related macular degeneration.
