Functions include protein homodimerization activity and chaperone binding.
Important paralog: GRPEL1.
Essential component of the PAM complex, required for translocation of transit peptide-containing proteins into the mitochondrial matrix in an ATP-dependent manner.
Controls nucleotide-dependent binding of mitochondrial HSP70 to substrate proteins and stimulates ATPase activity of mt-HSP70.
May modulate the interconversion of oligomeric (inactive) and monomeric (active) forms of mt-HSP70.
