Target Information
The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome family of proteins share similar domain structures and are involved in signal transduction from cell surface receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. They are regulated by multiple stimuli and interact with various proteins. These proteins associate with the small GTPase Cdc42, which regulates actin filament formation, and the Arp2/3 complex.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, inherited, X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The WAS gene product is a cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells, which show signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in patients. A transcript variant with a different 5′ UTR sequence has been described, though its full-length nature remains unknown.
