Target Information
Human Rap1 is the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. HRap1 localizes at telomeres and regulates telomere length via TRF2 recruitment rather than direct telomere binding. The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399 amino acid protein (~47 kDa) that does not interact with TRF1. TRF2, a Myb-related DNA-binding protein, binds duplex TTAGGG repeats and protects chromosome ends by maintaining telomere terminal structure. Mutant TRF2 forms have been linked to senescence prevention and apoptosis induction in mammalian cells.
