Target Information
Variant histone specifically required to direct the transformation of dissociating nucleosomes to protamine in male germ cells. It replaces classical histone H2B prior to nucleosome-to-protamine transition and likely acts as a nucleosome dissociating factor, creating dynamic chromatin for histone exchange.
Also expressed maternally and found in the female pronucleus, suggesting a similar role in protamine replacement during fertilization.
Detected in fat cells, though its specific functions and modifications remain unclear.
Core component of nucleosome; histones regulate transcription, DNA repair, replication, and chromosomal stability through post-translational modifications and nucleosome remodeling.
