Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is present in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and in neutrophil secondary granules.
LF plays diverse roles including:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
Lactoferrin acts as a major first-line defense against microbial infections through Fe³⁺ sequestration and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activity. Three isoforms (α, β, γ) have been identified, and receptors for LTF are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
