Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, being predominantly expressed in all types of muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle).
Its expression is stage- and tissue-specific, induced during terminal development of skeletal muscle cell differentiation.
In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin is localized in the Z-disk region and at the intercalated disk.
In smooth muscle, expression is more heterogeneous.
Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas.
During myocardial dysfunction, dramatic changes in the distribution of desmin have been observed.
