Heme oxygenase는 heme 대사에 필수적인 효소로, heme을 biliverdin으로 절단하고 biliverdin reductase에 의해 bilirubin으로 전환하며, carbon monoxide를 생성합니다. 이 효소는 heme 및 다양한 비-heme 물질에 의해 유도되며, 두 가지 isozyme인 inducible heme oxygenase-1(HMOX1)과 constitutive heme oxygenase-2(HMOX2)로 존재합니다. HMOX1과 HMOX2는 heme oxygenase 패밀리에 속하며, 여러 가지 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
