Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune or infectious conditions. It is expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, secreted into serum, and triggers transcriptional inflammatory responses via the IL-6 receptor alpha. Dysregulation of IL-6 is linked to various inflammatory diseases such as diabetes mellitus, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Kaposi sarcoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are also associated with viral infections including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
