Target Information

Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein that is cleaved to its activated form by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex. In its activated form, Protein C contains a serine protease domain that degrades activated coagulation factors V and VIII. It is produced in the liver and consists of two polypeptide chains. The 62 kDa proenzyme is activated by thrombin bound to an endothelial receptor, and the active enzyme (55 kDa) inhibits blood coagulation. Normal plasma concentrations are approximately 1–3 ng/mL for the active enzyme and 3 µg/mL for the proenzyme. Mutations in the Protein C gene are associated with thrombophilia, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venous thrombosis.
