Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)는 혈청 인자로 처음 발견되었으며, 중추 및 말초 신경계, 심혈관계, 위장관계 등 다양한 생물학적 과정 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
분자 클로닝 연구를 통해 5-HT1B를 포함한 5개의 5-HT1 수용체 아형이 확인되었으며, 이들은 adenylyl cyclase에 음성적으로 결합합니다.
Radioligand 결합 연구에서는 5-HT1B 수용체가 흑질, 배측 피질하부, 창백핵, 상구 등에 존재함을 보여줍니다.
In situ hybridization 연구에서는 5-HT1BR mRNA가 해마 CA1 피라미드 세포, 소뇌 Purkinje 세포, 후각 결절, 시상하부 핵 등에서 풍부하게 발현됨을 확인하였습니다.
