Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
ER-resident proteins such as calnexin act as molecular chaperones, assisting in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with fully assembled receptor complexes.
It functions as a chaperone retaining incompletely folded proteins in the ER.
Unlike soluble ER proteins that contain the KDEL sequence for retention, calnexin lacks this motif but possesses positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention.
Calnexin structure includes a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
