Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as a regulated energy reserve. Adipose cells secrete physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein localized to the surface of lipid droplets and regulated hormonally. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, inhibiting hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which mediates triacylglycerol hydrolysis.
Perilipin expression is limited to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells, with two known isoforms (A and B) produced by differential splicing of a single-copy gene.
