Product Specific Information

This GA5 monoclonal antibody reacts with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) from human, mouse, rat, chicken, rabbit, and pig. GFAP is a 49-kDa type III intermediate filament protein expressed in neural tissues, distinguishing astrocytes from other glial cells. The predominant alpha-GFAP isoform is expressed in astrocytes and can co-assemble with vimentin and nestin. GFAP assembly depends on phosphorylation of the N-terminal domain. Mutations in the GFAP gene are associated with Alexander disease and overexpression occurs in certain glial-derived tumors.

Applications Reported:

  • Immunohistochemical staining (FFPE tissue)
  • Microscopy
  • Immunocytochemistry

Applications Tested:

  • Tested by IHC on FFPE human tissue using low pH antigen retrieval
  • Recommended ≤ 1 µg/mL (optimize by titration)

Filter Recommendation:
Use filters capturing 570 nm emission (e.g., Excitation 545/25, 565LP, Emission 605/70).
Standard Alexa Fluor™ 555 or TRITC filters are acceptable.

Excitation / Emission: 555 nm / 570 nm

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein expressed in astrocytes and certain glial cells of the CNS, peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. It is also expressed in neural stem cells and serves as a key astrocyte marker. GFAP is found in brain tumors, liver Kupffer cells, lens epithelium, and salivary tumors. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
