Target Information
Parvalbumin (PV) is a calcium-binding protein expressed in specific muscle fibers and fast-firing neurons. It belongs to the EF-hand protein family and plays a key role in calcium decay during muscle contraction and relaxation cycles. Parvalbumin expression correlates with muscle relaxation rate and is found in GABAergic interneurons involved in maintaining excitatory/inhibitory balance in the cortex and hippocampus. In ALS patients, parvalbumin immunoreactivity is absent in neuron populations lost early in disease progression.
