FOXP2는 forkhead/winged-helix (FOX) 전사인자 패밀리에 속하는 단백질로, 태아 및 성인 뇌뿐 아니라 폐, 장 등 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다.
이 단백질은 FOX DNA 결합 도메인과 다수의 polyglutamine 트랙을 포함하며, 약 300~400개의 유전자 프로모터에 직접 결합하여 다양한 유전자의 발현을 조절하는 진화적으로 보존된 전사인자입니다.
FOXP2 유전자는 배아 발생 중 언어 및 발화 관련 뇌 영역의 정상 발달에 필수적이며, 언어 발달에 영향을 미치는 다양한 생물학적 경로에 관여할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 SPCH1 (speech-language disorder 1)로 알려진 자폐형 발화·언어 장애를 유발합니다. 여러 대체 전사체가 보고되어 있으며, 다양한 아이소폼을 생성합니다.
