Target Information
The Kininogen 1 gene generates two proteins via alternative splicing: high molecular weight kininogen (HMWK) and low molecular weight kininogen (LMWK).
- HMWK is essential for blood coagulation and assembly of the kallikrein-kinin system.
- Bradykinin, a peptide with multiple physiological effects, is released from HMWK.
- LMWK, in contrast, is not involved in coagulation.
Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
