Target Information
Arginase-1 (Arg1) is a 35 kDa enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to urea and L-ornithine, representing the final step in the urea cycle. The resulting polyamines are essential for cell proliferation and detoxification. Arginase 1 down-regulates nitric oxide production by depleting NO synthase substrate.
In humans and mice, Arginase 1 is expressed in the liver, neutrophils, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC), and neural stem cells. In mice, it is a hallmark of alternatively activated macrophages (M2a). Arginase 1 is also often found in hepatocellular carcinomas and myeloid cells infiltrating tumors.
Defects in Arginase 1 cause argininemia, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyperammonemia.
