Target Information
Alpha-internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H), sharing similar sequence motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons express alpha-internexin along with other neurofilaments, while some express only alpha-internexin.
Antibodies to internexin are valuable tools for studying neuronal types and tracing processes in tissue sections and cultures. Its early expression makes it a useful marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to neuronal lineage. Potential applications in brain tumor research remain under investigation.
