Target Information
Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein that is cleaved to its activated form by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex. Activated Protein C contains a serine protease domain and degrades activated coagulation factors V and VIII. It is produced in the liver as a 62 kDa proenzyme, which is activated by thrombin bound to endothelial receptors. The active enzyme (55 kDa) inhibits blood coagulation. Normal plasma concentrations are approximately 1–3 ng/mL for the active form and about 3 µg/mL for the proenzyme. Mutations in the Protein C gene are associated with thrombophilia, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venous thrombosis.
