Target Information
ME2 encodes a mitochondrial NAD-dependent malic enzyme, a homotetrameric protein that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate. This gene has been previously weakly linked to Friedreich ataxia, though that condition is now known to result from mutation in a different gene. Certain SNP haplotypes of ME2 may increase risk for idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encode different isoforms of this gene.
