Target Information
The GP130 protein acts as a signal transducer shared by multiple cytokines, including IL6, CNTF, LIF, and OSM. It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, with activation dependent on cytokine-receptor binding. Viral IL6 (vIL6) from Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus can directly activate GP130 without IL6R. Knockout studies in mice indicate its critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Multiple alternatively spliced isoforms have been identified.
