Target Information
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential for several mitochondrial enzymes and other subcellular compartment proteins. They are composed of sulfur and iron and are synthesized through multiple steps involving cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, and scaffold proteins.
The ISCU gene encodes two isomeric forms, ISCU1 and ISCU2, of the Fe-S cluster scaffold protein. Mutations in this gene are associated with myopathy characterized by severe exercise intolerance and myoglobinuria.
