Target Information

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) are enzymes that regulate transcription by selectively deacetylating or acetylating the eta-amino groups of lysines located near the amino termini of core histone proteins. Eight members of the HDAC family have been identified and are divided into two classes, I and II.
Class I includes HDAC-1, 2, 3, and 8, which share 45–93% sequence identity in their deacetylase domains.
Class II includes HDAC-4, 5, 6, and 7, which are approximately twice as large and have deacetylase domains in the C-terminal regions (HDAC-6 has two such domains).
While HDAC-1, 2, and 3 are broadly expressed, HDAC-4, 5, 6, and 7 show tissue-specific patterns, indicating distinct substrate specificities and biological roles.
