Target Information
This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its main function is to produce NADPH, an essential electron donor for defense against oxidative stress and for reductive biosynthetic reactions. G6PD shows significant genetic diversity, with many variants resulting from missense mutations that affect enzyme activity and clinical outcomes. G6PD deficiency can lead to neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
