Target Information
IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Interaction with its receptor activates signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 different alpha isoforms along with beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist in many species including rats, mice, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFN alpha plays a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysregulation is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
