Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins are essential for nuclear processes involving chromosome structure, such as mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression.
SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex required for sister chromatid cohesion during metaphase. Mutations in the SMC1 gene are associated with Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
