Target Information

Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), produced in the mucosa of the small and large intestine, extends the 29 amino acid sequence of pancreatic glucagon by 8 additional residues at the C-terminus.
The biological activities of pancreatic glucagon include glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis, which counteract insulin action, leading to increased blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies have shown glucagon in pancreatic A (alpha) cells, comprising 15–20% of islet cells, located at the periphery of pancreatic islets.
Pathological manifestations of glucagon-type peptides are mainly associated with tumors or glucagonomas. Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful as cell and tumor markers in immunohistochemistry and as analytical tools in hormone quantification.
