Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) transfers high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to creatine in the cytosol and belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family. It exists as sarcomeric and ubiquitous isoenzymes encoded by separate genes. MtCK forms dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic isoenzymes which are only dimeric. Sarcomeric MtCK shares 80% sequence homology with ubiquitous MtCK. The gene includes motifs common to nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, possibly essential for coordinated activation during mitochondrial biogenesis. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
