EEF1D 유전자는 elongation factor-1 복합체의 서브유닛을 암호화하며, 아미노아실 tRNA를 리보솜으로 전달하는 효소적 역할을 담당합니다. 이 서브유닛은 guanine nucleotide exchange factor로 작용하며, HIV-1 Tat과 상호작용하여 숙주 세포 mRNA의 번역을 억제하지만 HIV-1 mRNA는 억제하지 않습니다. 여러 가지 대체 스플라이싱된 전사체 변형으로 다양한 이소폼이 보고되었습니다.
