Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a key role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.

Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and regulation. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development.

The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression induces apoptosis in different cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to target proteins.

Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been observed in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. The N-Myc gene is amplified in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus to immunoglobulin loci is associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Aberrant c-myc expression is found in tumors of diverse origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
