Target Information
Defensins are a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial tissues such as intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif. Several alpha defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8. The DEFA4 gene differs by an extra 83-base segment, likely due to a recent duplication within the coding region. The encoded protein, defensin alpha 4, is found in neutrophils and exhibits corticostatic activity, inhibiting corticotropin-stimulated corticosterone production.
