Target Information
Metallothionein (MT) is a sulfhydryl- and cysteine-rich protein found in microorganisms, plants, and all animal species. These low-molecular-weight proteins play key roles in cell growth, repair, and differentiation, and are primarily involved in metal ion detoxification, protecting cells from cadmium, mercury, and copper toxicity.
Metallothioneins are broadly expressed in heart, liver, kidney, breast, and testis tissue.
Metallothionein 3 (MT-3 or GIFB, growth inhibitory factor) is a 68-amino-acid protein of the type 1 family within the Metallothionein superfamily. It is highly expressed in astrocytes of the normal human brain but reduced in brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
