Target Information
This gene encodes a transcription factor belonging to the leucine zipper family of DNA-binding proteins. It binds to the cAMP-responsive element, an octameric palindrome, and interacts with host cell factor C1. This factor also associates with the herpes simplex virus (HSV) protein VP16, which induces transcription of HSV immediate-early genes. Both this protein and VP16 bind to the same site on host cell factor C1, suggesting a role in HSV latency establishment. An additional transcript variant has been identified, though its biological validity remains uncertain.
