Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA, which is present in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 5q.
