Target Information
The PON2 gene encodes a member of the paraoxonase family, comprising three known members located adjacently on chromosome 7.
The encoded protein is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues, membrane-bound, and may function as a cellular antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Its hydrolytic activity against acylhomoserine lactones—key bacterial quorum-sensing mediators—suggests a role in defense against pathogenic bacteria.
Mutations in this gene may be linked to vascular disease and phenotypes associated with diabetes.
