Target Information
Humans with lipodystrophy exhibit loss of body fat, fatty liver, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance. Mice with mutations in the fatty liver dystrophy gene show similar phenotypes. The mouse gene responsible for this condition, Lpin1, encodes a nuclear protein called lipin, which is essential for normal adipose tissue development and is a candidate gene for human lipodystrophy.
Human homologs include LPIN1, LPIN2, and LPIN3, mapped to chromosomes 2p25, 18p11, and 20q11-q12, respectively. The mouse genes encoding Lpin1, Lpin2, and Lpin3 are located on chromosomes 12, 17, and 2.
