Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which are signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand stimulation, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and forms a complex with SMAD4, regulating transcriptional activity. It is also a substrate for E3 ubiquitin ligases such as SMURF1 and SMURF2 and undergoes proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
