Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which is related to the Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans Sma genes. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
This protein mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals, influencing cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, it becomes phosphorylated and forms a complex with SMAD4, regulating transcription.
SMAD1 is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
