SERPINB6 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 serpin 슈퍼패밀리 및 ovalbumin-serpin 서브패밀리에 속합니다. 원래 태반 트롬빈 억제제로 발견되었으며, 생쥐 상동체는 내이의 모발세포에서 발현됩니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 비증후성 진행성 난청과 관련이 있으며, 내이에서 스트레스 시 리소좀 내용물 누출로부터 보호하는 역할을 합니다. 이러한 보호 기능 상실은 세포 사멸 및 감각신경성 청력 손실을 초래할 수 있습니다. 또한, 대체적으로 스플라이싱된 전사체 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
