Target Information
Dual oxidases DUOX1 and DUOX2 are NADPH oxidases involved in hydrogen peroxide production necessary for thyroid hormonogenesis. They form heterodimers with specific maturation factors DUOXA1 and DUOXA2, respectively, which are essential for the maturation and function of DUOX enzyme complexes.
The DUOXA1 gene encodes the DUOX1 activator or maturation factor. Studies indicate that DUOXA1 is cotransported to the cell surface when coexpressed with DUOX1 but retained in the endoplasmic reticulum when expressed alone. Expression of DUOXA1 and DUOX1 is not suppressed by thyroglobulin (Tg), unlike DUOX2 and DUOXA2. DUOXA1 also acts as a p53-regulated neurogenic factor involved in neuronal differentiation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist.
