Target Information

The HADHB gene encodes the beta subunit of the mitochondrial trifunctional protein, which catalyzes the last three steps of mitochondrial beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. This membrane-bound heterocomplex consists of four alpha and four beta subunits, with the beta subunit responsible for 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase activity. The protein also binds RNA and can reduce the stability of certain mRNAs. The alpha and beta subunit genes are located adjacent to each other in a head-to-head orientation in the human genome. Mutations in HADHB cause trifunctional protein deficiency. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
