Target Information

Valproic acid, valproate sodium, and divalproex are anticonvulsant compounds used to control certain types of seizures in epilepsy treatment.
Valproic acid relieves histone deacetylase (HDAC)-dependent transcriptional repression and induces hyperacetylation of histones both in cultured cells and in vivo. It inhibits HDAC activity in vitro, likely through binding to the catalytic center of HDACs.

Moreover, valproic acid promotes differentiation of carcinoma cells, transformed hematopoietic progenitor cells, and leukemic blasts from acute myeloid leukemia patients. Tumor growth and metastasis formation are significantly reduced in animal experiments, suggesting valproic acid’s potential as an effective cancer therapy agent.
