Fibrillin 1은 높은 시스테인 함량을 가진 세포외 단백질로, 다양한 세포외 모듈로 구성된 실 모양의 구조를 가지고 있습니다. 대부분은 47개의 EGF-like 반복으로 구성되며, 그중 43개는 칼슘 결합 서열을 포함합니다. 또한 8-cysteine 모티프(7개), hybrid 모티프(2개), 고유 도메인(3개)가 분포되어 있습니다. Fibrillin 1은 N-말단 근처에 프롤린이 풍부한 영역을 가지며, 이는 Fibrillin 2에서는 글라이신이 풍부한 영역으로 대체됩니다. 섬유소는 결합 조직 전반에 걸쳐 존재하며, 연장된 섬유의 구성 요소로 작용합니다.
