Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Multiple isoforms exist, with CD44H being predominant in normal tissues.
It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA), mediating cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays key roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression levels may increase in certain carcinomas and correlate with metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells exhibit high expression, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms with distinct functions. CD44 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may be related to tumor metastasis.
