Target Information

Mammalian apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE/ref-1) is a multifunctional enzyme involved in DNA repair and redox regulation of proteins related to oxidative signaling, transcription factor control (Fos, Jun, NF-kB, Myb, HIF-1α, CREB, Pax), cell cycle regulation (p53), and apoptosis.
APE repairs abasic sites in DNA caused by spontaneous loss or oxidative damage, chemical hydrolysis (chemotherapy), ionizing radiation, UV irradiation, oxidizing agents, and removal of modified bases by DNA glycosylases.
Expression of APE varies across tissues and developmental stages. It is regulated by phosphorylation through casein kinase II and is upregulated in hypoxia-reoxygenation and certain malignancies, while downregulation is associated with apoptosis induction.
