Target Information
Gemin 3 is a member of the DEAD box protein family characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) and functions as a putative RNA helicase. DEAD box proteins like Gemin 3 are involved in various RNA-related processes such as translation initiation, splicing, and ribosome assembly. Some members are implicated in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth. Gemin 3 possesses ATPase activity and is a component of the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex, possibly playing a catalytic role in SMN complex function on RNPs. Dysfunctions of Gemin 3 are associated with spinal muscular dystrophy and muscular atrophy.
